A361 (Banbury to Chipping Norton) Proposed Speed Limits

Oxfordshire County Council proposes to reduce the risk of future accidents by introducing a combination of area-wide measures, which along with specific speed limit reductions, include: resurfacing, improved drainage, vegetation removal, and site-specific measures such as: junction improvements, improved delineation of bends and junctions, safety barriers and cycle facilities. These have been tailored to limit the types of accidents which have been recorded on this road and have a proven record in reducing the risk of accidents.

The proposed reduction in speed limits are expected to achieve a direct impact on the number and seriousness of accidents. The effects of the speed limit amendments are as follows:

  1. extend the 30mph speed limit on the A361 Bloxham Road, Banbury to a point 170 metres southwest of the access to Crouch Farm,
  2. thereafter to introduce, in place of the current unrestricted (60mph), a 40mph speed limit on that road, south-westwards to near Wykham Lane (where the 50 limit meets),
  3. to introduce, in place of the current unrestricted (60mph) a 50mph speed limit on the A361 South Newington Road from 336 metres southwest of Cumberford, to 250 metres northeast of The Town junction (through the parishes of Bloxham, Milcombe & South Newington),
  4. to introduce, in place of the current unrestricted (60mph) a 50mph speed limit on the A361 Banbury Road from near the Barford Road junction, south-westwards to near Great Tew Road (through the parishes of Little Tew, Swerford, Great Tew, South Newington),
  5. to extend the 40mph speed limit on the A361 Banbury Road, leading out of Chipping Norton by 120 metres.

Objections to the proposals and other representations, specifying the grounds on which they are made, may be sent in by completing the online questionnaire, via email or in writing (quoting ref: CM/12.6.120) to the address below by 12 April 2019.
