Gillotts Lane (Harpsden, Henley-on-Thames) Proposed Traffic Calming Build-out & Road Narrowing

Oxfordshire County Council proposes to construct the following traffic calming measure on Gillotts Lane in Harpsden (Henley-on-Thames). The scheme is being proposed in order to help improve road safety by moderating both the volume and speed of traffic on this narrow rural lane. Additionally, it is proposed to reduce the width of the lane back to its original width, as over time it has become artificially widened by vehicles attempting to pass each other:

  • Kerbed build-out (approx. 8m* long by 1m* wide):
    • on the north side of the carriageway approx. 200 metres* south-east of its junction with the exit to the Gillotts School.
    • The build out will reduce the width of the carriageway to 3.25 metres (from 4.6 metres) and will be accompanied by additional signs and lining improvements, and
    • priority will be given to traffic travelling north-westwards towards Greys Road.
  •  Road Narrowing:
    • carriageway to be narrowed for approx. 45 metres* between the public footpath ref.242/8/10 & access to Garden Cottage,
    • reduced from average width of 4.5m* to a uniform width of 3.25m*, with associated kerbing & reflective bollards introduced, and
    • priority will be given to traffic travelling north-westwards towards Greys Road..

* All dimensions are approximate, taken from the centre of the junction to the centre of the feature.

Objections to the proposals and other representations, specifying the grounds on which they are made, may be sent in by completing the online questionnaire, via email or in writing (quoting ref: CM.12.6.245) to the address below by 29 May 2020. The Council will consider objections and representations received in response and they may be disseminated widely for these purposes and made available to the public.

Any unresolved objections will be reported to the Council’s Cabinet meeting later in 2020. The papers for the meeting will be available on the County Council’s website about a week before the meeting.
