Harwell Campus Entrance Improvements

The Proposed Scheme

Oxfordshire County Council has been successful in obtaining City Deal funding from the Department for Transport for a number of schemes in the Science Vale area. One of these is to improve access to the Harwell Campus which is a strategically important part of the Enterprise Zone and Science Vale. The site is subject to continuing, ambitious development and the access improvements are required to complement these developments.

Proposal SV 2.9 of the recently consulted on Connecting Oxfordshire: Local Transport Plan 2015-2031 aims to improve the Harwell Campus entrance to facilitate additional trips into/out of the site and supplement the improved Chilton Interchange.

The current give-way junction at Thomson Avenue and Newbury Road (A4185) will be insufficient to cater for the predicted future growth. A three-arm roundabout has been designed (see scheme plan in documents section below) to provide suitable access. The proposed roundabout scheme also includes:

     - A segregated cycle bypass for cyclists travelling southbound on Newbury Road.

     - Improved bus stop provision with a footpath.

     - Improved central refuge crossing areas.

Next Steps

The scheme is currently at the preliminary design stage; comments on all aspects of the scheme will be considered and fed into the detailed design of the scheme. Work on site is expected to start in the first quarter of 2016.

Feedback will be made available once the consultation responses have been analysed.
