Oxfordshire Street Design Guide

The Oxfordshire Street Design Guide will provide accessible and comprehensive guidance to developers, transport planners, engineers on design that applies from master planning to detailed design. We want to promote innovative design and promote active and healthy travel behaviour while recognising that travel behaviour needs to change to facilitate the growth coming forward in the County.

Why is it needed?

Oxfordshire is an area of growth with 100,000 homes and 80,000 new jobs planned over the period 2011 - 2031. Delivering this level of growth offers an exciting opportunity to create healthy and innovative environments for the residents of Oxfordshire. Streets have an important role in creating friendly and social neighbourhoods that remain functional for all users. This document seeks to provide guidance on how different streets can be designed to suit the needs of residents.

What is it about?

With this planned growth, the demand for travel is also growing and changing. Travel behaviours are switching to active and sustainable transport modes, therefore streets need to designed to meet these demands. The document provides guidance on how the demand for walking and cycling can be met whilst also recognising the important role streets have in the movement of vehicles. To ensure streets are functional, healthy and safe for all users this document sets standards on a number of technical issues such as street hierarchy, space allocation and parking.

Who is it for?

The aim of this document is to provide guidelines for developers promoting housing, employment and commercial development to support innovation and originality further enriching an already diverse Oxfordshire. This document will also be used by our officers who are promoting schemes within the County.

It is important to recognise that we all have a role to play in the creation of healthy streets. Whilst this document has been put in place by Oxfordshire County Council and sets a number of guidelines, it purposely leaves a large number of design features flexible for developers. This encourages collaboration to create a variety of healthy and safe streets for the residents of Oxfordshire.
